Lukas 1:52-53

1:52 He has brought down the mighty ¹  from their thrones, and has lifted up those of lowly position; ²

[1:52]  sn The contrast between the mighty and those of lowly position is fundamental for Luke. God cares for those that the powerful ignore (Luke 4:18-19).

[1:53]  ³ sn Good things refers not merely to material blessings, but blessings that come from knowing God.

[1:53]  ⁴ sn Another fundamental contrast of Luke’s is between the hungry and the rich (Luke 6:20-26).

[6:21]  ⁵ sn You who hunger are people like the poor Jesus has already mentioned. The term has OT roots both in conjunction with the poor (Isa 32:6-7; 58:6-7, 9-10; Ezek 18:7, 16) or by itself (Ps 37:16-19; 107:9).

[6:21]  ⁶ sn The promise you will be satisfied is the first of several “reversals” noted in these promises. The beatitudes and the reversals that accompany them serve in the sermon as an invitation to enter into God’s care, because one can know God cares for those who turn to him.

[6:21]  ⁷ sn You will laugh alludes to the joy that comes to God’s people in the salvation to come.

[10:15]  ¹⁰ sn In the OT, Hades was known as Sheol. It is the place where the unrighteous will reside (Matt 11:23; Luke 16:23; Rev 20:13-14).

[18:14]  ¹¹ sn The prayer that was heard and honored was the one given with humility; in a surprising reversal it was the tax collector who went down to his home justified.
